Each quarter, the Outreach team represents ProBAR by organizing, hosting, and attending various initiatives and events across the Rio Grande Valley. Summer 2023 was a busy season! Read below to learn about some highlights from last quarter’s community engagement calendar and how you can connect with ProBAR.
Back-to-School with LUPE
In August, ProBAR had the privilege of supporting an annual back-to-school event organized by community organization La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE). In addition to distributing school supply items to children in attendance, ProBAR distributed rights information and shared how to connect with our services. The event was well attended with several hundred children and their families present.
Connecting with Pre-Law Students
The ProBAR Outreach team organized a half-day program for pre-law students participating in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) to learn about the organization’s work. Ten UTRGV undergraduates and their professor heard from staff from various ProBAR programs about their work and experiences through several presentations and a panel. Each student was also afforded an opportunity to connect one-on-one with an attorney or law student fellow to seek advice regarding their plans for law school and future legal careers. ProBAR was excited for the opportunity to continue our engagement with the LSPI program and to support future attorneys in their professional journeys.
Welcoming and Informing Visitors to the Rio Grande Valley
ProBAR welcomed a group of twelve visitors participating in a program with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) for a panel discussion about ProBAR services and the impact of our work. Our team welcomed the opportunity to share their experiences providing legal services and to inform the group about challenges faced by immigrants and asylum-seekers.
